DMX vs. Zimmerman boxing match cancelled

A much hyped and even more divisive bout between DMX and acquitted Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman has been called off, according to promoter Damon Feldman.

“This was the wrong person to put in the ring and define celebrity boxing,” said Feldman Saturday on Twitter following a barrage of criticism on social media about the fight. He said he was scrapping plans because he’d rather be happy and make people happy.

“All you people are right,” tweeted Feldman, who later added, “I want to thank everyone for the good and bad comments. I’ve made the choice to cancel the fight with George Zimmerman. More to life than money.”

The DMX camp, meanwhile, was putting its own spin on the cancellation, suggesting DMX had second thoughts. “The George Zimmerman fight is canceled,” DMX spokesman Domenick Nati said in a statement Saturday. “DMX never agreed to the fight and we thank you for all of the support from DMX’s fans.”

However, it was reported that DMX had justified a decision to fight Zimmerman on moral grounds, saying that he was doing it for “every black person who has been done wrong in the system.”

The bout between the veteran rapper and Zimmerman generated mixed responses with many in favor and against it.

Lamarcus Felder was all too excited to see Zimmerman possibly issued the violent justice many feel he deserves.

“I want this fight to be personal and ugly, I want there to be a bloody knockout of Zimmerman,” said Felder. “I want that disgusting animal to physically feel all the pain Trayvon’s family is emotionally feeling, due to his savage actions.”

Brandon West of Hampton was also in favor of the boxing match and believes a professional should have been chosen to fight Zimmerman.

“I think Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather would be a great choice,” said West. “My grandma and I were talking about it and she thinks it should have been Trayvon’s father. It would’ve made more sense.”

DMX was not Zimmerman’s first choice as an opponent. It was reported that rapper The Game was eager to get in the ring with Zimmerman, but Zimmerman declined and tried to get rapper Kanye West because of his big name. Sources say West never responded. DMX was then chosen by Feldman from an apparent list of thousands of applicants.

Along with petitions put on Change.org and the White House website, many locals are against the event.

“My first hang up with all of this is why Zimmerman is considered a celebrity,” said Hampton resident Jasmine Manley.

Newport News resident Christian Witherspoon believes Feldman is just a money-hungry opportunist.

“This fight is just a money-making, hate-generating and racially divisive event,” said Witherspoon. “If this were to happen it would only incite more racial bias and hatred.”

One must wonder where the Martin family plays into the planning and publicity of such an obviously abhorrent happening.

“I’ve heard many people say they felt that Travon’s dad should be the one to fight Zimmerman, I disagree,” said Newport News resident Lamont Greene. “This was announced right around Trayvon’s birthday, I believe. How insensitive. I know the family must feel disgusted and disrespected that someone’s trying to make money off of the memory of their son’s killing.”
