Rufus Johnson is currently the Music Instructor at Harvie Elementary School in Henrico County. He has been with the County of Henrico for 9 years, and has been an educator for 11 years.
Johnson is a Richmond native and a graduate of Henrico High School. Johnson earned his Bachelors of Science Degree from Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. While there, he was active in many school activities, including earning the title of Mr. Fayetteville State.
As an educator, Johnson believes he has a great responsibility to be a role model in and out if the classroom.
"It's not enough to just be great within the walls of the school, but it's also important for me to be a model everywhere: from the church to events throughout the community. I constantly see students of mine out and about and they are in awe of seeing their teachers out in public! They're always watching and learning from us!"
Johnson believes that the image of the Black male in education is almost non-existent, so it's important to maintain a positive image in the school system.
"Many times I've had students tell me I'm a father figure to them, and that helps me to keep pushing and stay positive when it gets tough. Our youth are watching and learning, even when we don't think so or realize it. I try to stay conscious of that at all times."
