21-year-old wanted in Newport News homicide

— Newport News homicide detectives have obtained warrants for 21-year-old Christapha Enrico Herman Hayes in connection with the shooting death of Paris Bennett.

According to police, Hayes is wanted for murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and has a last known address in the 1000 block of Aberdeen Road in Hampton.

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, just before 2 a.m. a Newport News Police Department sergeant was outside of Central Precinct on Dresden Drive when he heard several gunshots coming from the area of Dresden and Adams Drive. When officers arrived in the area, they located several shell casings; however communications never received any calls in reference to gunshots.

A short time later, police communications was notified by an area hospital that an individual had brought a male to the hospital with a life threatening gunshot wound. Bennett, the victim, was a 21-year old Newport News man. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Bennett became the 10th Newport News homicide victim this year.

Homicide detectives are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have declined to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
