Health awareness campaigns focus on heart disease prevention

— National Stroke Awareness Month and Blood Pressure Awareness Month in May share the spotlight with the National Million Hearts™Initiative. Robert Reitz, Virginia Department of Health’s South Region heart disease and prevention coordinator is acknowledging these heart-health awareness campaigns through his promotion of the Million Hearts™Initiative. This initiative, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Center for Medicaid Services, seeks to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Heart disease and stroke are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States, and responsible for 1 of every 3 deaths in this country. Yet, preventative steps can reduce risks for heart attacks and strokes.
